Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is the (Noncancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland. This enlargement causes Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), which are the bothersome signs that a patient presents with.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of BPH/LUTS vary and gradually worsen over time and include:

    • Frequent and urgent need to urinate.
    • Increased frequency of urination at night (nocturia).
    • Difficult starting urination.
    • Weak urine stream or a stream that stops and starts.
    • Dribbling at the end of urination.
    • Inability to completely empty the bladder.

Less common

    • Urinary Tract Infection.
    • Inability to urinate.
    • Blood in the urine.

Causes

An enlarged prostate gland that blocks urine flow through the urethra.

Risk factors

  • Aging, above 50 years.
  • Family history.
  • Diabetes and heart disease.
  • Lifestyle-obesity.
  • Erectile Dysfunction.

Complications

  1. Urinary retention.
  2. Urinary tract infections.
  3. Bladder stones.
  4. Bladder damage.
  5. Kidney damage.

Management

  1. Lifestyle Modification including
    • Limit taking beverages in the evening.
    • Limit caffeine and alcohol intake.
    • Follow a healthy diet.
    • Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
    • Stay active.
    • Double voiding.
    • Scheduled bathroom visits.
    • Limit decongestants and Antihistamines
  2. Medical management using prescription drugs.
  3. Minimally invasive or surgical therapy
